Korea

Korea is a really boring comic drawn by Kathleen. Set in Christchurch (weird name, I know) in Kathleen's native New Zealand (ha), it features the (swiss)adventures of a pair of convenience store employees and their friends. "Black humor, capers, philosophy, douche-baggery, and less ass." The comic is known for its lethal amount of sarcasm, and has been on hiatus since late 2007, when Kathleen was eaten by rabid fans. According to Kathleen the name Korea has nothing to do with the country nor are there any Koreans in the comic. It actually has to do with what was originally planned to be the supersecret ending, where everyone eats horrible Korean food and dies of violent explosive diherrea.

Setting

Korea is set in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand in 1978. Most of the comics occur in and around the convenience store that Quinn and Trevor work at.

Characters

Quinn El-Azmi

Curmudgeonly, irritable and generally unpleasant, Quinn is the assistant manger of a Bee Mart dairy. At 25 , he has dropped out of university has no appreciable plans to anything except pop out to the chemists and buy some smokes. Quinn is self destructive, depressed and quite possible alcoholic. He would be a goth if it was not so much work. Well, actually, everyone is so sarcastic you can't tell who the fuck they really are. While everyone acknowledges the fact that Quinn is depressed, his sarcasm doesn't really seem to let any evidence of any kind of depression through. He may just be pretending to be depressed to get the chicks.

Jane Cheng

Jane is short cruel and bossy . She is just finishing up her masters in economics, but is thinking about converting to a PhD simply to avoid getting into the real world. She is a younger than Quinn because she skipped a grade when she moved from Singapore. She loves British music and has a small shrine to Damon Albam hidden in her closet. Don't ask who that is. She, like all the other characters, is extremely sarcastic to the point of delirium.

Trevor Ramirez

Everyone knowns someone like Trevor - he's loud sarcastic and obnoxious. Obsessed adding more notches to his headboard, he is always chasing tail and trying to get girls to take up his offers of free bedtime aerobics classes. His moral compass may point south but he's still a likable guy. In real life he would have been eaten by the many savage Scandinavians that roam the barren plains of New Zealand.

Emma Davison

Emma is 20 years old, in love with Elliott Smith and very idealistic. She is very tall and has an ... interesting take on personal style. The bigger, the clunker, the better in her mind. Emma is secretly looking forward to being 40 years old and wandering around in caftans and large sunglasses. She was added late in the comic to reduce sarcasm, as before her addition the sarcasm in the comic was approaching lethal levels.

Eric Pendergast

Eric has lofty dreams and knowns a lot about writing yet he is not terribly motivated. He prefers to live in his head and when real life does not measure up to his expectations he gets discouraged or very rarely cranky. Eric has secret crushes on Emma, 1978 Debbie Harry and Kari Byron. He is a wimpy loser, which is sarcastically acknowledged by the other characters, and also would have been eaten by Scandinavians if he were real.

Plot

There is no real plot.

It all starts with a suicide...

The repercussions of the suicide of a delivery boy in the store. Quinn, Jane and Trevor introduced. This plot is just a rumor, however, as during the time of its creation the art was so bad and the words so tiny no one could make out what was really going on.

Rhino Sweat Adventure

To help deal with Quinn's depression, Trevor plans to steal some rhino sweat. Only problem is that rhinos do not sweat. Yeah. I know.

Come Dance With Me

Emma moves away from the farm to the big city, moving into a flat about the Bee Mart. Emma and Eric introduced a lack of sarcasm that kept the readers of Korea from being exposed to lethal amounts of the substance.

Quinn's Very Bad Day

Quinn tries to try to kill himself. Unfortunately his extreme sarcasm prevents him from doing anything but sit around and mock people. Eric follows Emma to Christchurch.

We are full of Good Ideas

The five main characters go on vacation and visit the Ranforly and its Art Deco festival. Everyone gets drunk. Drunk=Happy. This is around the point where Kathleen stopped kidding herself and axed the comic to avoid death by sarcasm. Unfortunately the fans of the comic had grown rabid from prolonged exposure to lethal sarcasm, and quickly ate her and everyone around her within a five-block radius.
