This page deals with cards from the game Bohnanza as they pertain to the rules of Viking Secret Wildcard Poker.

Overview

Bohnanza bean cards are gathered by players into their 'Fields' to be spent in later hands to increase their multiplier. Different combinations of cards result in different multipliers.

Card Descriptions

Bohnanza cards come in 11 types:

  • Black-Eyed Bean
  • Blue Bean
  • Chili Bean
  • Cocoa Bean
  • Coffee Bean
  • Garden Bean
  • Red Bean
  • Soy Bean
  • Stink Bean
  • Wax Bean

Terminology

A bean card has several different numbers on it to keep in mind.

Bean Card Guide image
  1. The topmost number determines a bean card's rank. This is calculated by starting with 25 and subtracting the card's number.
  2. The numbers along the bottom tell you how many you need in your field before a multiplier can be gained.
  3. The coins show the multiplier bonus gained if you have that many beans. Each coin in a stack represents x10.

Setup

The bean cards are shuffled into the general deck by the dealer at the beginning of the game. It is recommended to use a subset of the cards, as the Bohnanza deck is large. Consider using a maximum of 50 bean cards, with multiple of the same type so combos can be made.

The Field

When the Bohnanze bean cards are in play, each player has a 'Field' in addition to their hand. The Field is an area where the player can store bean cards by placing them face up on the table in front of them. Cards in the Field remain there between hands until the player uses them to gain multiplier.

Bean cards are used in three different ways, depending on where they appear in the round:

  1. Dealt to a player as one of their Pit cards:
    • The player declares the card immediately, before betting takes place.
    • The resource card is removed from the player's hand and placed in their Field.
    • The dealer deals another card to the player to replace the resource card in the Pit. If this new card is also a resource card, the process is repeated.
  2. Dealt as either the Knuckle card or in the Flaps:
    • Any player may count the bean card as being in their field.
    • Cards from the player's Field are still discarded when a multiplier is played, but any in the community remain, and can be used by more than one player (as is expected from a community card).
  3. Dealt as the Pants card:
    • All beans of the same type in Fields are doubled.
